UI Health is seeking an innovative professional to serve as OB Safety and Quality Specialist. The primary responsibility of the OB Safety and Quality Specialist is to promote safe care for mothers and babies by keeping patient safety and quality as a focus on all OB Unit operations and clinical practice. This position works collaboratively in the OB Unit with the Director of Obstetric Services and the Associate Chief Nursing Officer. Facilitates adherence to national practitioner and nursing OB clinical standards and promotes OB patient safety and quality. Provides formal and informal OB safety education. Facilitates goal-setting and ensures data collection is completed. Participation in the OB Unit's goals and objectives and active involvement in OB safety and quality decisions is expected. The OB Safety and Quality Specialist actively participates in OB committees related to safety and quality. Proactively liaises with Risk Management and the Director of Obstetrics Service and Patient Safety regarding OB safety and quality issues identification, adverse events, and OB safety and quality initiatives. It also provides regular progress updates to the Director of Obstetrics Service and Patient Safety and the Associate Chief Nursing Officer.
Serve as an OB patient safety and quality advocate and clinical role model in obstetrics:
In cooperation with the Director of OB Service and Patient Safety and Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) and their staff, collect, evaluate, analyze and report data required for clinical service quality evaluation. Review of patient medical records, relevant staff interviews, and appropriate documentation. The OB Safety and Quality Specialist has prescriptive authority to assess, identify, evaluate, and monitor risks and hazards identified through data collection. Perform chart reviews and audits to support investigations being undertaken within the Hospital and/or requested by state, federal and/or local regulatory authorities for the obstetrical service. Provide analysis and input to leadership about trends and results of analyses; participates in the development of action plans and implementation of recommendations.
Work with Risk Management and Director of OB Service and Patient Safety/ACNO to assist and support the OB healthcare team with disclosure when an adverse event or untoward outcome occurs. Work with Management and coordinate with the Director of OB Service and Patient Safety and ACNO regarding coordination of adverse events and near misses with development of action plan and implementation.
Keep up to date with changing national standards of clinical OB practice and OB safety and quality literature. Disseminate pertinent safety and quality information related to the OB Unit.
Perform collaborative reviews of adverse occurrences and near-misses and incorporate findings into educational efforts. Participate in Root Cause Analysis and maintains a database of records reviewed, issues identified, and plans of correction. Coordinate briefing, debriefing, and analysis of selected charts with OB healthcare team members.
Sentinel Event and Adverse Event Report Case Analysis.
Review patient-related call documentation, medical records and other sources to identify possible sentinel and adverse events.
In cooperation with the Director of Obstetric Service and Patient Safety and ACNO, conduct sentinel event and adverse event report investigation, review medical records, interview staff, examine equipment, and prepare a report of the investigations. Participate in filing the reports, development of action plans, and track progress. If sentinel event or adverse event analysis is done by others, track the completion of those reports. Through coordination with the Director of Obstetric Service and Patient Safety and ACNO assist UI Health/UIC legal with quality improvement initiatives in acquiring documents, fetal monitor strips and other data on designated cases that are already undergoing analysis.
Facilitate review of neonatal injury with established criteria and compile clinical synopses and physician/nursing analyses for those records meeting. Participate in neonatal quality review as requested.
In collaboration with the CNCII, coordinate regular OB patient safety educational programs for staff and facilitates OB clinical drills for high-risk situations (e.g., shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, emergency cesarean birth, and neonatal resuscitation).
Foster and promote participation by the practitioners, nurses and staff in educational programs, simulations and clinical drills. Facilitate and support teamwork-training program for the OB Practitioners.
Implement OB safety and quality initiatives, including administering safety surveys.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Graduate degree in Nursing required.
Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse required.
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Demonstrated experience in leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, interpersonal communication, education, clinical experience and change management required.
Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification from National Certification Corporations required.
NRP Certification is required.
Five (5) years of obstetrical clinical experience with progressive responsibility and accountability required.
Experience in OB safety and/or quality initiatives in a leadership role.
Computer skills with Microsoft, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Clinical experience in an academic tertiary level Obstetrical Service preferred and clinical skills in electronic fetal monitoring, labor, birth and high-risk obstetrics.
Strong communication skills as a collaborator and facilitator.
