This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Learn more The Chief Nurse, has substantial and continuing responsibility and accountability for planning, organizing, directing and controlling issues which include managing day-to-day operation of the acute care units, responding to internal and external communications, maintaining knowledge of and communicating standards of practice and care and accreditation standards, coordinating services within acute care efforts to meet those standards, and developing systems to enhance overall operations and communication within acute care and with all other services in the medical center. The incumbent participates in the Quality Management program to promote quality nursing care within the framework of the philosophy, objectives and allocated resources for Nursing and Patient Care Services. The Chief Nurse, is responsible for administrative functions of his/her assigned nursing units/programs. He/she functions as an administrator, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory in collaboration with Patient Care Service and other services. Must establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of medical center personnel and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels. Key relationships with staff are needed to (1) Assist nurse managers and advanced practitioners to carry out the functions and activities expected of them, (2) Contribute ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, and objectives for the enhancement of nursing organization-wide, (3) Assist in policy-making activities as related to customer service and the overall functioning of administrative and clinical programs, and (4) Collaborate with other health care staff to establish and maintain programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care. The incumbent works closely with the all other Chief Nurses to create systems for reporting data that measure acute care productivity, workload, and quality. The incumbent oversees use and maintenance of these systems and works closely with the Chief Nurse colleagues for nurse staffing and resource management. The incumbent is responsible for oversight of the acute care units to include the medical/surgical and the intensive care units and acts as Deputy Associate Director for Patient Care Services and Associate Director for Patient Care Services when necessary. The incumbent works closely with the Chiefs of Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Long Term Care and Anesthesia Services to develop programs that assure Acute Care patients receive optimal care that meets and exceeds local and national standards of care. The incumbent works with executive level staff of other services at the local and network level to assure seamless patient care throughout our system.
