Apheresis Procedure Nursing
Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH
The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, part of Dartmouth Health is a Level-1 academic center in New Hampshire that offers exciting, acute care opportunities in a rigorous, academic-focused environment. Our staff are well educated and serve as central figures in the success and governance of our system. They love our beautiful medical center and the relaxed lifestyle that comes with living and working in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Apheresis is a specialty involving several interdisciplinary teams including transfusion medicine, hematology/oncology, laboratory medicine, immunology, transplant medicine, neurology, and cardiology. Apheresis nurses manage various procedures including therapeutic plasma exchanges, red blood cell exchanges, LDL apheresis, extracorporeal photopheresis, peripheral blood stem cell collections, and CAR-T cell collections. Procedures are performed at a single academic hospital under the supervision of an on-site Transfusion Medicine physician. The apheresis program is predominantly an outpatient service with inpatient procedures performed when medically indicated. In addition to running the apheresis instruments, nursing tasks include patient education, vascular access evaluation and care, medication administration, reaction management, and coordination of care. Apheresis nurses undergo a rigorous on-site training process that includes a thorough education on principles of apheresis medicine, preparation and maintenance of apheresis machines, and reaction protocols. As an additional bonus, the nurses oversee the care of our healthy blood donors in the Blood Donor Program. These roles are Monday through Friday, with limited scheduled "on-call".

Why are we so unique? We are a nationally recognized Academic Medical Center set in picturesque New Hampshire. We recognize that “quality of life” means different things to different people, but we are very confident you will love it here as we have beautiful, rural, and suburban housing options, world-class primary, secondary, and graduate schools, hundreds of lakes, thousands of miles of hiking trails and some of the best skiing in the country. This all means you can be a happy nurse with more quality time with friends, family, pets, or maybe just quiet hikes by yourself.
