The Adult Emergency Department is a 53 bed, high acuity, high volume ED. The ED serves at the Regional Trauma Center and is the Only Level 1 Trauma center in the city and the state of New Mexico. This is a fast-paced unit that maintains more than 15 hall beds and sees 160-180 patients per day.Â
These patients range from all types of trauma, motor vehicle accidents, farming/outdoor accidents, abdominal pain, cardiac emergencies, broken bones and many more.
In current state, the ED holds at least 40-50 inpatients per day waiting to go inpatient units. UNM Hospital is also a certified stroke center and cardiac center.
The unit is staffed with RNâs and a wide range of technical staff (LPNs, Paramedics, EMT Intermediates, patient care techs, transporters, and clerks). The department is also staffed 24/7 with an ED pharmacist, respiratory therapist, EKG technician, lab technician, and Security. Ideal staffing is a 4:1 ratio (22 nurses per shift). This is often pushed to a 5:1 ratio depending patient census and ED capacity. The ED staffs 1-2 RN supervisors 24h/7 days/week, 365 days a year. Inpatient capacity boarding and staffing are the EDâs biggest challenges.
